Dogs vs Cats: The Diversity Paradox

Different dogs look incredibly different - but that doesn't mean they are necessarily more diverse.
To learn more about this topic, start your googling with these keywords:
phenotypic diversity - the range of different observable traits in a certain organism - for example, size, color, strength, and friendliness.
genetic diversity - the variation in the genetic information within and among individuals of a population or species
artificial selection (or selective breeding) - a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable characteristics

this video, while quite informative sets a REALLY bad example so innocently. Its obvious this video is something that, while not made for kids, is very welcoming of the concept of a teacher showing it in class. It acts like an educational video while regularly throwing in seemingly uninformed opinions about selective breeding. It explains the concept well but completely glosses over any sort of health concerns for the animals and even at the end humors the idea of selectively breeding cats like you would flying cars or some shit. The people at MinuteEarth obviously did quite a bit of research on this topic and arent incapable people which is why im honestly a little disgusted that by being so neutral on the topic that theyve at least somewhat shown that they are willing to turn a blind eye to something like this on a video where they know could hit a million people. They have such a positive hue the entire video its honestly frustrating. Im a bit more than disappointed in this and im even more upset on the fact that they never mention it, the completely lack of acknowledgement

As a cat person I fucking hate how people don't take the race of the cat into account. You don't put a farm cat in an apartment building. Similar some cat species are best kept more inside. Though most of those will happily go inside again quickly if left outside. My British shorthair is outside every day but comes back inside less than 30 minutes later. Often with a mouse(we live next to a swamp) Because of the similar looks there are many people who have no idea that different breeds require different things.

Oh, we breed cats deliberately. It's just that you don't mess with perfection. Also you haven't included larger breeds of field cat, and other felines like the ocecat, ocelot and tiger which can technically be domesticated, but are scary as hell. In theory you could throw tiger DNA into the housecat mix, as they've done with ocelots to create the ocecat, but they don't thank you for it. Ultimately small and lazy, lying in a sunbeam is a cats ultimate form. And as there is evidence of selective breeding in ancient Egypt, this whole video is kinda bupkiss. But I enjoyed the cute animal pics though!

There are breeds of cat that vary drastically in size, the Singapura is the smallest breed of cat while the Mainecoon is the largest breed of cat, coming close in size to the original ancestor of cats. Munchkin cats are the Dachshund of the cat world while Oriental Short/Longhairs are the sighthounds of the cat world. There are breeds that drastic vastly, Persians have very long, thick coats, large eyes and next to no muzzle while the Oriental Shorthair has normal eyes, long muzzle, impossibly long legs and a very short coat. I really think more breeds of cat should have been looked at, yes, there are some breeds where it's hard to tell them apart, but there are many where there is a drastic difference in facial structure, coat type, size and body build.
