I'm taking a bit of inspiration from Lockstin & Gnoggin but, if we're talking about prophecies from Darkrai it could be a reference to Necrozma (who in Lockstin's theory) most likely absorbing all the light from an alternate timeline and since it couldn't handle all the energy absorbed created a big bang which caused a timeline split in let's go Pikachu and Eevee and essentially reset the universe. Again this is just regurgitating the info I got from Lockstin's video so it might be wrong in some places.

Maybe the reason that darkrai inflicted a never ending nightmare on kids are that pokemon battle you when you interact with them. So not only do kids generally explore, they have a much less acute sense of danger. So kids probably stumble on darkrai then don't run as they are curious so darkrai curses them.

Maybe the home was Darkrai's territory and they didn't know then that would explain why the other ghosts overran it afterward they were hangin with Darkrai I don't know if this is that strong either though.

To finish up your theory: the only unresolved part of all the clues is the old lady saying she used to play by the bridge with her Abra. Abra is most notoriously known for one move: Teleport. They teleport all over the area, while suddenly they teleport in to a place where they shouldn't have: Darkrai's den. Darkrai is schocked by the sudden invaders and casts its nightmare powers onto the girl. Abra wants to teleport them away, back home. But when they are teleported back in the house, Abra notices his friend doesn't move. The girl lays there, moveless, completely still with her eyes closed. Abra was too late, albeit a split second. Darkrai had already cast its neverending nightmare move. But hey, that's just a theory... A COMMENT Theory

Maybe darkrai just gives nightmares as a natural defense mechanism something it can't control all the time maybe since it did have contact with people it tried to be friend the girl but by complete accident it gave her the endless nightmares and fled scared and ashamed of what it happens to her maybe he tried to help but not wanting to risk giving the parents nightmares too stayed away. This is just my theory on what i think may have happened some legendaries are cool with people some aren't maybe some want pokemon and human interaction suicune in pokemon crystal actually shows that it is interested in the player same thing can be said about lucario in x and y and of course mew being the fun loving and playful pokemon it is and was (if you remember the anime it died like thanos snap it wasn't feeling so good) any way pokemon have show to be interested in humans the only ones who haven't we're the one's who were missed treated by humans in one way or another prime example bulbasaur when we first meet bulbasaur it doesn't like ash or his friends at all the only one it does like is the girl taking care of all the lost or wounded pokemon until the end after seeing ash caring about not only people but other pokemon it joins him and becomes one of his most loyal pokemon in the entire series heck when ash returns from aloha for the kanto trip bulbasaur's eyes light up and it jumps into his arms missing his old friend. Another examples are tepig and chimchar when we first see tepig he was abandoned dirty alone and scared but when he meets ash it changes he not scared he's not sad he has friend who cares about him. The exact same thing can be said about chimchar when we see him with Paul he looks fine chimchar is happy but later on we see him weaker covered in scratches and dirty paul just wants strong pokemon his entire line up just watch paul push chimchar to his breaking point and then when chimchar loses paul abandones him and releases him but then chimchar gets welcomed by ash and we see how an emotional effect happens to chimchar he even gets flashbacks of when paul and electikid treated him but when we see him go one on one with electivier infernape goes beast mode remembering everything and finally beating his personal demons. Another good example of pokemon holding emotions is the one the only the heretic Pokemon (yeah that's the name i gave to mine) mewtwo created in a lab poked with needles by strange beings holding anger for the experiments done to it and at the end destroying the lab and killing some of the staff and it's creator mr.fuji who had his own agenda. then fleeing into a cave where only the strongest trainers go secluded in isolation away from humans away from Pokemon completely alone remembering what they had done. Pokemon and humans go hand in hand just like there are good people and bad people there are good Pokemon and bad Pokemon sad people and sad pokemon. Lonely people and lonely pokemon it would make sense that darkrai wanted to have a friend seeing this kid it through it could try but due to it giving out nightmares it as its defense mechanism it caused a horrible accident and it fled away in fear and regret of what it had done. So yeah that's my take on it thanks to those who read my comment and i hope you reply with some feed back note that i did add some thing from the anime games and the pokemon origin mini series if i missed anything from the manga put it down on the comments!

it might have been another mythic or legendry pokemon kinda copying drarkrais stuff yveltal nexrozma giratina and eternatus are all evil at SOME point pokemon or meant to be evil and we know pokemon can get ''defensvie or aggressive'' for no apperent reason like there might be another legendary that can mainuplulate other legendary pokemon that is not one of the original perhaps its some sort of arceus

Seems pretty obvious to me, she played around where the bridge was going to be with a possibly violent abra, his turf, and he felt threatened, he went for the abra, girl tried to block it. Construction started and fight or flight kicked in again but this time he chose flight, so he left

I just realized that darkrai can use nightmares to communicate. Do you think that darkrai tried to tell the girl something and she didn't get it, so he kept her there? Like, warning her about kyurem or the other great dragon pokemon? I dont know, but it could have happened.

I know I’m late to the conspiracy party and I’m probably about to say some pretty dumb and I’m guessing chances are incorrect stuff but it’s an attempt. So how you were saying Darkrai is not a violent Pokémon and he is a legendary, a Pokémon you can get in the game albeit it’s a very complicated process but if you do in the Pokémon world it’s sure to show you are a very strong trainer and you could try and get him in the forest. So let’s trainers regularly came to try and catch him with big teams and whatnot that probably would put any legendary on edge, his forest on the map looks not too far away from the Strange House. The family maybe frequently visited the house just a guess that they did considering most little kids have many Pokémon you find on the outskirts of the forest, darkrai is fleeing from a battle sees more people and just uses his nightmare move in case they are trainers but hits the wrong person. All the parents see is nothing but there little girl now asleep with nightmares. I know it’s probably very bad but it’s just a thought
